Kourtney Kardashian Goes for the Gold (Bikini) in Cannes

As of late, the Cannes Film Festival has become less synonymous with the feats of cinema being put on display, and more so with the hoards of celebrities and supermodels who descend upon the coastal French town in order to take a super glamorous turn on the event’s red carpet. But even this grand spectacle of black tie dressing is beginning to be subverted thanks to the every vigilant gaze of social media as more and more eyes turn to what these stars are wearing, or not wearing, during the off-duty moments of their Riviera vacation. That means that one’s range of swim attire has become just as, if not more, important than those fresh off the runway evening gowns, but thankfully Kourtney Kardashian is more than capable of meeting the new demands of this uncharted two-piece territory.

Of course, the reality star got plenty of practice debuting an envious array of water-friendly fashions during her raucous, week-long Mexican birthday vacation, wearing one super sexy suit after the next. Showing off a teeny-tiny leopard print one-piece in a belfie one day, an assortment of hydrophobic velvet bikinis the next, and a whole lot of under-boob baring two-pieces in between. So by the time Cannes rolled around, Kourt’s arsenal of yacht apparel practically curated itself.

While Kendall was busy serving the finest in jort fashions on the red carpet, Kourtney’s been spending her holiday predominately aboard various boats with her new beau Younes Bendijma and the requisite comprehensive wardrobe of swimwear. While she started off the festival giving us a Baywatch moment in a red high-cut one-piece, she quickly transitioned to a retro-inspired high-rise Milly suit and a faux-pierced nipple bikini. And on Wednesday, she debuted her latest offering via a photo on her Instagram account (alongside close friend Simon Huck), showing off a tiny gold two-piece with her hands demurely covering her breasts, contributing to the long-held celebrity tradition of punning off of the French city’s name, writing, “Cannes you feel it?” Well, Cannes you?

Peyton Manning joins Chris Stapleton on Red Rocks stage

While people across the country were watching Chris Stapleton perform on the season finale of the "The Voice," those who scored tickets to his Red Rocks show on Tuesday night were treated to a special surprise.

The country singer was joined by none other than Peyton Manning.

Stapleton and the former Broncos quarterback shared a microphone and performed a rendition of “Tennessee Whiskey.”

'Star Wars 8' Video Reveals Amazing Behind-the-Scenes Look at 'The Last Jedi'

Tomorrow is the 40th Anniversary or Star Wars, with A New Hope having arrived in theaters way back on May 25, 1977. To celebrate, Vanity Fair has released their special Star Wars: The Last Jedi preview. And with it comes an awesome new reel that goes behind-the-scenes.

We finally have a better look at Star Wars: The Last Jedi to hold us over until the movie arrives in December. The very first teaser trailer for the movie was revealed not long ago, but now Disney and Lucasfilm have decided to spoil us by giving us just a bit more to study, dissect and rewatch until our eyes bleed Kyber crystals. This excellent behind-the-scenes video offers us even more footage and secrets from the upcoming follow-up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Disney and Lucasfilm are going all in and their main focus is Star Wars: The Last Jedi. They want people to be excited about this movie and they are succeeding in a big way. Here, we get to see Luke and Leia reunited, new characters are revealed, and there is just a ton of cool images to gawk at.

Unlike with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the studio held out for a very long time when it came to even revealing the official title for Star Wars 8. But now that the release date is approaching, they are pulling back the veil of secrecy and giving us some stuff to chew on. We will be picking apart the Star Wars: The Last Jedi videos for months, but this behind-the-scenes featurette is just as deserving of your attention. Just as they have done with the other new Star Wars movies, Vanity Fair assembled this video as a way to give fans not just footage, but a true look at what is going into this movie and a feel for what we will be getting into. These are becoming a nice bit of regular promotional material for the Disney era Star Wars movies, with Annie Leibovitz on set for a special set of photos.

Fans have a ton of questions heading into The Last Jedi and, prior to the release of the teaser trailer, we hadn't even really seen any actual photos from the movie. So now that we at least have some footage to go on, this movie feels more real than ever. Since we had to wait for so long to get this teaser for the next installment of the Skywalker saga, it is a nice treat to get this little additional reel as well. Star Wars fans are obsessive, so doing something like this really helps to satiate the appetite for the movie, while not giving away too much.

The cast for Star Wars Episode VIII includes Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong'O and Mark Hamill. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and is set for release on December 15. You can check out the behind-the-scenes featurette for yourself below.

Carrie Fisher Would've Been 'Front and Center' in Episode IX and Other Reveals From 'Vanity Fair'

Following yesterday’s debut of its latest issue’s four cover images, Vanity Fair has now published its eagerly anticipated preview feature on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It includes heartbreaking news for the millions of fans still grieving the loss of Princess Leia herself, Carrie Fisher.

During a discussion about how Fisher was a source of strength and support for her younger co-stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega as they shouldered the new Star Wars trilogy, the article reveals that the yet-to-be-produced Episode IX was going to focus on Fisher’s Princess Leia. As producer Kathleen Kennedy recalls about completing filming The Last Jedi:

“[Fisher] was having a blast. The minute she finished, she grabbed me and said, ‘I’d better be at the forefront of IX!’ Because Harrison was front and center on VII, and Mark is front and center on VIII. She thought IX would be her movie. And it would have been.”

The Star Wars brain trust is hard at work trying to figure out how to reconfigure Episode IX in the wake of Fisher’s unexpected death late last year. One thing the Vanity Fair feature confirms is that Princess Leia will not be resurrected via CGI, à la her brief, youthful cameo in last year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with Kennedy stating flatly, “We don’t have any intention of beginning a trend of re-creating actors who are gone.”

Mark Hamill still can’t get over the loss of his co-star and dear friend, stating:

“I can’t say that phrase, what you just said: Carrie’s name and then the d-word. Because I think of her in the present tense. Maybe it’s a form of denial, but she’s so vibrant in my mind, and so vital a part of the family, that I can’t imagine it without her.”

As if that weren’t sad enough, the magazine also delivered the stunning photo of Hamill and Fisher together, below:

Fisher wasn’t the only news to come out of the story. We also learned about writer/director Rian Johnson’s sequel:

The remote island of Ahch-To, where Luke has been living for years, is home to a village community populated by “an indigenous race of caretaker creatures whom Johnson is loath to describe in any more detail, except to say that they are ‘not Ewoks.’”
John Boyega’s Finn will begin The Last Jedi recuperating from injuries suffered in his Star Wars: The Force Awakens battle with Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren by spending some time in a bacta suit.
Benicio Del Toro will be playing a “shady character” who is never named in the movie, but whom everyone on set referred to as “DJ.”
Laura Dern will play a prominent Resistance officer named Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo.
Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose, who we learned at Star Wars Celebration would have an integral Last Jedi role, will team up with Finn for “a mission behind enemy lines.”
Rose and Finn will spend at least part of their adventure at a ritzy casino city named Canto Bight, which director Johnson describes as “a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief. It was an interesting challenge, portraying luxury and wealth in this universe.”

Colin Kaepernick Reportedly Expected to Work Out for Seahawks

After two and a half months of waiting, we officially have word of a potential Colin Kaepernick workout. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported early Wednesday morning that the free agent quarterback is expected to be among a group of quarterbacks that will work out for the Seattle Seahawks.

Earlier this month, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said the team was looking into backup quarterback options, and Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III were among the many they were considering. A couple days later, Mike Silver reported the Seahawks general manager had gotten in touch with Kaepernick’s agent to discuss a backup role. Peter King thought they made the most sense, but we had not heard anything develop since then. Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett has said he thinks Seattle is a perfect landing spot for Kap.

There is no word yet on who else the Seahawks will bring in for a workout. Their current depth chart behind Russell Wilson includes Trevone Boykin and Jake Heap. The Seahawks start their OTAs on May 30, and have their mandatory minicamp June 13-15. With a week remaining until they start OTAs, it makes sense that they would be looking to get a quarterback in before full offense vs. defense drills begin.

More than 25,000 child car seats recalled due to injury risk

Popular children’s product company Graco is recalling more than 25,000 convertible child restraints due to an issue that can lead to serious injuries to children in the event of a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the recall of 25,494 Graco Children’s Products Inc. Graco My Ride 65 convertible child restraints, models 1871689, 1908152, 1813074, 1872691, 1853478, 1877535, 1813015, and 1794334.

The NHTSA says in their description of the issue, “In the event of a crash, the child seat webbing may not adequately restrain the child. As such, these car seats fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 213, ‘Child Restraint Systems.'”

The NHTSA says Graco will notify owners of the impacted My Ride 65 car seats that their product has been recalled and dealers will provide consumers with a replacement harness for free.

The recall is expected to begin July 17, 2017. Owners may contact Graco customer service at 1-800-345-4109.

Tom Cruise Confirms ‘Top Gun’ Sequel

Maverick is back on the highway to the Danger Zone.

Syracuse native Tom Cruise confirmed Wednesday that "Top Gun 2" is finally entering production after years of talk about a sequel to the 1986 movie.

"It's happening. It's definitely happening," the 54-year-old actor said on the Australian TV show "Sunrise." "I'm gonna start filming it probably in the next year."

Cruise and original producer Jerry Bruckheimer have long discussed a followup to the highly-quotable film about a hotshot pilot in the U.S. Navy. The project first picked up steam in 2012, but was put on hold when original director Tony Scott died in 2012.

According to Deadline, Bruckheimer met with Cruise to discuss fitting "Top Gun 2" into his schedule during an on-set visit of "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" last year. A script writer has not been named, but the famed producer said the plot has been ready for several years.

"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay," Bruckheimer said in 2014. "It's just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he's very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture."

It's unclear who else will star in a "Top Gun" sequel, but original star Val Kilmer is rumored to be returning as Maverick's rival Iceman. Kelly McGillis, Tom Skerritt, Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins are also still acting frequently and may be available.

The project is expected to be released through Paramount Pictures, with involvement from Paramount, Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Skydance. No possible directors, soundtrack artists or other details have been revealed.

Cruise's comments Wednesday are the first time he hinted at a possible production start date, so more announcements are likely soon.

Cruise is promoting "The Mummy," Universal Studios' reboot of the classic movie monster that will kick off a new cinematic universe called the Dark Universe. Russell Crowe will play Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Javier Bardem will play Frankenstein's monster and Johnny Depp will be the Invisible Man in upcoming films that could see crossovers like Marvel's "Avengers" franchise.

"The Mummy" hits theaters June 9. Cruise's upcoming films also include "Luna Park," "American Made" and "Mission: Impossible 6."

David Ross loses quest for ‘Dancing’ trophy

Was there a goat hiding somewhere in the studio?

For retired Chicago Cubs catcher David Ross, his quest for another championship trophy came to an end Tuesday when he failed to become the season 24 champ of “Dancing with the Stars.” One of three finalists on the hit ABC reality series, Ross and his partner Lindsay Arnold finished second behind the winning duo of NFL running back Rashad Jennings and his partner Emma Slater. Finishing in third place were Fifth Harmony’s Normani Kordei and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy.

In a hail of confetti, a thunderous standing ovation from the ballroom crowd and warm embraces from the show’s cast and his fellow finalists, Jennings was all smiles as he accepted the glittery globe trophy.

The final competitive performances fell into the category of a 24-hour Fusion Challenge. Each pair had 24 hours (from Monday night’s round) to learn an entirely new routine combining two disparate dance styles, which they had previously danced this season.

Heading into Tuesday night, Ross was solidly third behind second-place Kordei and first-place Jennings in the judges’ scoring.

But in terms of fan votes (ABC does not reveal official total votes cast) Ross benefited throughout the season from diehard Cubs fans who continuously voted their World Series champ into another week of competition. It was not enough to put him over the top Tuesday.

In the competitive round, Ross and Arnold were tasked with dancing a foxtrot/salsa fusion. The stylized routine brought praises from the judges’ panel, with head judge Len Goodman remarking, “Dancing is a joyful thing and watching you dance has brought me joy.” Judge Bruno Tonioli said: “Whatever happens tonight, to me you are already the people’s champion.” Ross’ final score: 36 out of 40.

Kordei and partner Chmerkovskiy performed an Argentine tango/foxtrot fusion for their final dance. The powerful performance earned praise from Hough who called the fusion “seamless,” and Goodman called the dance “clean and precise.” Kordei’s final score: 40 out of 40

Jennings and Slater came out swinging with their tango/salsa fusion, which earned high praised from three of the four judges. Judge Goodman criticized the lack of hold in the foxtrot portion of the routine, which in the end cost Jennings a critical perfect score. Jennings’ final score: 39 out of 40

It was a 10-week journey for all three finalists. For Ross, it began March 20 with his baseball-inspired Cha-Cha, which earned him a debut score of 27 out of 40. It was an uphill battle from there as the MLB catcher would find himself in the middle of the pack or toward the lower end of the leader board each week, as he and Arnold navigated the foxtrot, tango, jive, Argentine tango, paso doble and Viennese waltz, among others.

At the start of the show, host Tom Bergeron spoke to Ross about experience on “DWTS.”

“This show is harder than I ever imagined. … I’ve grown as a dancer, I’ve grown as a person. I’m having the best experience,” Ross said.

Turning to Arnold, Ross said, ” This relationship is special, and you’re a great person and you know I’m gonna miss the heck out of you.” As his eyes noticeably welled up with tears, Ross said, “Sorry America, more tears.” Turning to Arnold, he said, “You know I love ya.”

In a look back at his season, Jennings said, “Coming into the season, it was my first time on the dance floor. But when the music came on it was tick, tick, tick, it’s showtime! Dancing for one-minute and 13 seconds on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ you get more recognition that I did in eight years in football,” he said laughing. Highlighting Jennings’ quest for perfection in every dance he did, co-host Erin Andrews revealed the football player put in and amazing 362 rehearsal hours this season, 100 hours more than either of the other two finalists.

Taking a look back at her season, Kordei thanked everyone in the show for their support each week, and turning to Chmerkovskiy, she said, “I could not have done this by myself. I have the best partner in the world.”

Over at Wrigley Field, where the Cubs were playing the San Francisco Giants, pitchers John Lackey, Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester, outfielder Kyle Schwarber and catcher Miguel Montero were among a group who hung out in the clubhouse to watch their former teammate compete one last time. “I’m actually surprised he’s made it this far,” Lester remarked. “I told him to take a fall in the first couple [rounds] and pull a hammy and just go home. He’s been doing real well obviously. It’s good to see. I’m sure that’s obviously very uncomfortable to get up there and do that in front of millions of people. I can only imagine. But good for him. We’re all competitors and we all want to win everything we do. And hopefully he wins.”

The two-and-a-half-hour telecast was filled with a host of musical guests and dance production numbers featuring an avalanche of pros and celebrities. Hailee Steinfeld performed her new single “Most Girls,” OneRepublic performed their latest single, “No Vacancy,” while Lady Antebellum performed their hit “You Look Good” and TLC performed their hit single “Waterfalls.”

The show also featured a sneak peek at the upcoming live musical telecast production of “Dirty Dancing,” airing May 24 on ABC

Kyrie Irving’s hero ball rescues Cavs and shows Celtics what they’re missing

The Eastern Conference Finals showdown between the Celtics and Cavaliers had already been marked by the usual and unexpected entering Game 4.

The Cavs blistered the Celtics with a 44-point loss on the TD Garden parquet in Game 2.  Their season presumed on life support entering Game 3, the Celtics instead got a 27-point sharpshooting masterpiece from Marcus Smart — who will never receive an invite to the All-Star Weekend 3-point Shootout unless 200 others get lost in the mail — to steal a win and add some much-needed suspense to the series.

But nothing was odder than what turned out to be the turning point in the Cavs’ come-from-behind 112-99 victory in Game 4 Tuesday night. LeBron James found himself in foul trouble, about as rare of an occurrence as the habitually incredulous Kevin Love agreeing with an official’s call.

And yet somehow James’s zebra problems ended up being a blessing for the Cavaliers and what we’ll likely regard when all is said and done as the official beginning of the end for these admirable but outmanned Celtics. His absence allowed the Kyrie Irving Show to take the stage.

James was hit with his fourth foul with 6 minutes and 46 seconds left in the second quarter after barreling into Terry Rozier. When he went to the bench, the Celtics led 43-33. All was well.

It seemed an opportune time to build on the lead and put a genuine scare into a goofy Cleveland crowd that relies on scoreboard prompts such as Ben Roethlisberger photos as cues to cheer and boo. The Celtics had a real chance to make Steph Curry look presumptive for saying the Warriors know they’ll be playing the Cavs in the Finals.

Instead, James’s hiatus on the bench gave Kyrie Irving a chance to play hero ball. And a hero he became, again.

Irving scored 42 points — including 33 in 19 minutes after James’s fourth foul — to steer the series back in Cleveland’s command heading to Game 5 in Boston Thursday night.

“In the back of my mind, I was like, ‘They cannot tie up this series. They cannot,’’ said Irving. “We cannot go to Boston 2-2 and then it becomes almost an even series. Our focus level had to be at an all-time high.”

Irving’s dynamic skill-set — he’s one of the flashiest ballhandlers and most creative at-the-rim finishers in the league, and his range is limitless when he’s on — is sometimes overshadowed by the general magnitude of James.

But he is the player who hit the championship-winning shot last year, and he seizes and savors his opportunities to singularly shine.

He began seizing his chance in the second quarter, scoring 12 points in the frame and 18 overall in the first half, but the Celtics took a 57-47 lead into the break.

The Celtics seemed to have endured the outburst without too much damage. Turns out Irving was just getting warmed up en route to scorching.

Irving dropped 21 points in the third quarter alone on the Celtics, including 6 layups, a pair of 3-pointers, and a free throw in a span of less than 5 minutes. Sixteen of his points came in the final 3:48 of the third. The Cavs outscored the Celtics 43-20 in the quarter, seizing control of the game and, after a fairly suspenseless fourth quarter, the series.

James said Irving’s performance was no surprise to him.

“I’ve been saying he’s a special kid since I got here,’’ said James, who finished with 34 points. “He’s a special talent. As the stakes get higher and higher, his game gets higher and higher.”

This was a performance reminiscent of the best of Isiah Thomas. No, not Isaiah Thomas, the injured Celtics dynamo whom many of you insisted rather parochially in a Boston.com reader-response question a few days ago that you wouldn’t trade for Irving.

This performance was an unintentional homage to the original Isiah Thomas’s legendary 25-point quarter for the Pistons in Game 6 of the 1988 NBA Finals. The Hall of Famer. The best little man ever to play the game. The one who got hosed by the Dream Team. That Isiah Thomas.

The Celtics’ two superb defensive guards, Avery Bradley and Marcus Smart, could not slow Irving. And on the offensive end, even in tandem, they could not counter him. They combined for 27 points on 8 of 28 shooting — the same point total Smart had solo in Game 3. Bradley was the Celtics’ high scorer with just 19 points. Those narratives that Isaiah Thomas is somehow expendable met an abrupt and deserved demise Tuesday. The Celtics miss his offense, and defense doesn’t much matter when Irving is reveling so deep in the zone.

Smart finished just 1 for 9 from the field, missing left, right, short and long all night in what is known in math circles as regression to the mean. His most egregious miss was a 3-point bid with 5:45 left to play that, had it gone would have pulled the Celtics, trailing 98-92 at the time, to within 3 points. But it refused to fall, Love buried a 3 on the other end, and it was all over but the final accounting.

It was appropriate, then, that Irving scored the last bucket of the game, a stylish layup after he faked a Rondo-style wraparound pass. He deserved to punctuate the win after delivering exclamation-point plays time and again.

“All the [counter moves], and he’s able to shoot the ball,’’ said a gracious Bradley, beginning to list Irving’s strengths during his postgame interview session. “You can’t get into him too much. You can’t back off him too much. He’s a great finisher. He’s one of the best point guards in the NBA, and you can tell he puts a lot of work into his game.”

The Celtics might have thought they were getting a break when James had to leave the game. Little did they know that the Cavaliers’ other superstar was about to seize it, and perhaps the series too. The Celtics could use a Kyrie Irving of their own, don’t you think?

Microsoft Unveils New Surface Pro Device to Reverse Sales Drop

Microsoft Corp. unveiled a new version of its Surface Pro tablet and laptop combination device with more powerful chips and better battery life, updating an aging product with declining sales that hurt financial results last quarter.

The Redmond, Washington-based company introduced the fifth version of the Surface Pro at an event in Shanghai, the first time it’s held the launch of a major product outside the U.S. Microsoft also announced a version of Windows 10 for use by the Chinese government and state-owned enterprises, ending a standoff over the operating system by meeting the government’s requests for increased security and data control.

Surface Pro is the workhorse of the company’s computer hardware line. It’s the biggest seller among the Surface devices, a category that Microsoft created -- the two-in-one, or a tablet with a removable keyboard. Yet Microsoft’s Pro 3 and 4 are aging, and partners like Lenovo Group Ltd. and HP Inc. have come out with their own Windows-based versions, that give Microsoft software revenue but take away hardware sales. Meanwhile Apple’s take on the category, the iPad Pro, has been stealing market share.

Those factors contributed to a 26 percent drop in Surface sales last quarter. The new version should turn that around, said Yusuf Mehdi, who oversees marketing for devices and Windows. The device has 13.5 hours of battery life, a 50 percent improvement over the previous version, and runs Intel Corp.’s faster seventh generation Core chips.

“We have shown it to corporate accounts already and the reaction has been very positive,” he said. “We are optimistic this will get a good start out of the gate.”

The Pro will be available for pre-orders Tuesday starting at $799 and goes on sale June 15, the same day as the Surface Laptop Microsoft announced earlier this month. The device has a new kickstand that lets it fold almost flat to resemble a drafting table, similar to the pricier Surface Studio computer, and the Pro can now be controlled on screen by the Surface Dial device that Microsoft introduced with the Studio.

Custom Windows

Microsoft also announced customers for the Chinese government version of Windows 10, including the Chinese customs agency and the city government of Shanghai. This version of Windows 10 lets the government use its own encryption on its computers. A joint venture in China manages all the system updates and telemetry so no data leaves China, Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Windows and Devices chief, said in an interview.

The government can also remove features it doesn’t want like the OneDrive file-sharing service, or certain entertainment apps. The software is available only for government use and won’t be sold to any other Chinese customers, Microsoft said.

Operating in China has been something of a minefield for U.S. technology companies. Some are blocked, Microsoft is facing an antimonopoly investigation and in January a law took effect that requires telecommunications and internet companies operating in China to provide law enforcement with technical assistance, including decryption of sensitive user data, in any probe meant “to avert and investigate terrorist activities.”

Myerson said the custom version of Windows fully complies with the company’s values.

“We are aware this could be perceived as a sensitive issue but it’s quite appropriate for a sovereign country, within its own computer system and its own employees to have its own encryption systems,” Myerson said.

Long Negotiations

The product is the result of two years of work by the company and the Chinese government to resolve an impasse in which the government, citing security concerns, has refused to use either Windows 8 or Windows 10, blocking a key source of Chinese revenue for Microsoft.

Microsoft also announced that it’s bringing its full lineup of Surface hardware to the Chinese market. Currently, it only sells the Pro models and the Surface Book laptop in the country.

The company will also show a new Office app that lets a team of users create a digital whiteboard that they can all draw on simultaneously on different machines.

Pro-Islamic State group, army clash in Marawi City, Philippines

Five Philippine troops were injured in clashes with pro-Islamic State Maute insurgents on Tuesday in Marawi City, the Philippine army announced.

The scene of the firefight was near police headquarters and the campus of Mindanao State University, Senior Superintendent Oscar Nantes of the Lanao del Sur provincial police said.

The clash was initiated by the army, who saw Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon in the vicinity, with about 15 followers, Philippine Army spokesman Col. Jo-ar Herara said.

Maute is a radical Islamist group based in Lanao del Sur which, with Abu Sayyaf, has conducted terrorist attacks in the Philippines for several years. Both are aligned with the Islamic State, also identified as ISIS, ISIL and Daesh. At least 50 Maute members have been killed in isolated clashes with Philippine police and soldiers in the past five months. The number of Maute casualties in Tuesday's fight was not revealed.

On Tuesday, members of the Philippine army searched Marawi City for Hapilon and his party when the gunfire began. Armored vehicles were brought in, neighborhoods were locked down and two aircraft of the Philippine air force dropped bombs on selected targets.

The incidents in Marawi City, whose population of about 200,000 is largely Muslim, came two days before the start of the fasting month of Ramadan.
